Eugene John - Milne Bay
Eugene John is a local indigenous artist born and raised in the stunning Milne Bay in far eastern Papua New Guinea.
Eugene began his creative journey after being inspired at a young age and encouraged and taught by the elders within his community. After graduating with a Diploma in Fine Arts from the University of PNG in the year 2000, he began teaching whilst deciding what to do with his art.
In this tropical environment where the majority of the inhabitants live largely traditional lives in agricultural societies, painting has been a creative outlet that Eugene has used to express his awe and admiration for the people and rugged landscape that is Papua New Guinea.
Initially Eugene’s dream was to create an Art Studio and Gallery however he was hesitant to pursue this course due to fear of his art being stolen. After gaining an understanding of e-commerce and how he can safeguard his creative works, Eugene is working hard to make his dream a reality.
With a repertoire including drawing, signwriting and painting (especially portraits), Eugene puts much thought and feeling into his works. His eye-catching, vibrant work provide a juxtaposition of traditional and modern PNG ART with beauty and style.
Having had artwork displayed in a Cairns, Queensland Art Gallery filled Eugene with great pride not only for himself but his people and culture. His art oozes and exudes with these traits.
With a distinct perspective of the world around him and a desire to promote his culture and identity through his artwork, Eugene is driven to support his family and educate future generations by continuing to develop and improve his artistic skills and abilities.
